Intent data

Signals showing a prospect is actively researching, evaluating, or buying a solution in your category right now.

Published 7 August 2026

Intent data is observable signals that a prospect or account is actively evaluating, researching, or showing buying behavior in your product category. These signals—website visits, content downloads, keyword searches, vendor comparisons, job postings, earnings calls, technology stack changes—tell you someone is in motion on a problem your solution solves, often before they've talked to a salesperson.

Intent data works best when you move on it fast. A prospect downloading a competitive benchmark or visiting your pricing page is much closer to a decision than someone you cold-dialed last week. The person who spent 45 minutes on your demo page last Thursday is more likely to engage in your email than the person on a list of job titles.

Why intent matters on a real call

You start a discovery call with a prospect you found because they visited your comparison tool. You've already learned:

Instead of opening with "Tell me what you do," you can open with "I noticed you were looking at how we compare to [competitor] last week—what's driving that conversation right now?" You're not fishing. You're acknowledging motion and asking what triggered it.

The same prospect on a bought list is a cold problem. You don't know if they're looking at anything, evaluating anything, or just existing in a title.

Intent vs. ICP vs. firmographic fit

Intent data, Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), and firmographic data answer different questions and get confused because they're all used for targeting:

Term What it answers Example Timing
Intent data Is this specific account actively buying right now? "Acme Corp visited our demo page 3 times this week and downloaded the ROI calculator" Hours to days
ICP Does this company fit our ideal customer description? "Mid-market SaaS with 50–500 employees, $2M+ ARR, 3+ product lines" Pre-defined once
Firmographic fit Does this company have the right industry, size, or structure? "Enterprise financial services with decentralized IT" Pre-defined once

A company can be perfect ICP fit and firmographically ideal but showing zero intent. A company can show strong intent but be outside your ICP because the person evaluating is in a department you don't usually sell to.

Smart sales teams layer all three. ICP narrows the ocean. Firmographics identify the right pool within it. Intent tells you who's actually swimming right now.

The mistake people make with intent

Teams treat intent data like a prospecting list instead of a timing signal. They buy an intent dataset, blast everyone on it with an email, and wonder why the conversion rate is underwhelming.

Intent data doesn't tell you who to talk to first—it tells you when to talk to them. A prospect showing intent is not automatically qualified, not automatically a good fit, and not automatically ready to buy. It just means something in their world has changed.

The conversion comes from pairing intent with a relevant, personalized approach that acknowledges the specific signal. If they downloaded a guide on vendor selection, you don't ask them to take a 45-minute demo. You ask what criteria they're using to choose. If they visited your integration page, you don't pitch your core product—you ask what systems they need to connect.

Intent data also decays fast. A signal that's two weeks old is half as valuable as one that's two days old. Teams that win with intent either have it fed into their CRM in real time or they have a process to act on it within 24 hours.

Common questions

Where does intent data come from?

Intent comes from first-party signals (your own website behavior, email opens, demo requests) and third-party providers (Demandbase, 6sense, Terminus, LinkedIn ads data) that track research activity, content consumption, and technology changes across thousands of websites. First-party intent is always more accurate but third-party casts a wider net.

Can intent data predict if someone will actually buy?

Intent signals buying *readiness*, not certainty. It means a prospect is actively in motion—not that the deal is won. A person researching your category is more likely to engage than a cold prospect, but they may still choose a competitor or decide not to buy at all.

How long should I chase someone showing intent?

Intent decays quickly—most value is in the first 48–72 hours after the signal fires. If you're reaching out more than a week after the signal, the moment has passed and your timing advantage disappears. Prioritize fresh intent over stale intent.

Does intent data work if I'm doing outbound cold email?

Yes, significantly better than cold lists. Intent-based cold outreach can have 2–3x better open and reply rates than pure firmographic cold email because you're leading with relevance to something they're actively doing right now.
