Competitive win rate

The percentage of deals you win against a specific competitor, measured to identify where your product, pitch, or positioning loses ground in head-to-head matchups.

Published 5 October 2026

Competitive win rate is the percentage of deals you win when your solution competes directly against a specific competitor in the same evaluation. Unlike overall win rate, which measures your performance across all deals, competitive win rate isolates how you perform in direct matchups—it tells you whether you're winning or losing the deals you should realistically have a shot at.

You calculate it by dividing won deals against that competitor by the total number of deals where both solutions were evaluated. A 40% competitive win rate against Competitor A means that in every 10 evaluations where both your product and theirs made the shortlist, you closed 4.

When this matters on a real call

You're on a discovery call with an operations leader at a mid-market SaaS company. They mention they're also looking at a tool you know well—your closest competitor. You should know your competitive win rate against that player before you ever get on the call.

If your rate is 65% in that matchup, you have permission to be direct about the differences: "When we go head-to-head with them, we typically win because we solve X differently. Tell me if that's what matters to your team." If it's 30%, that discovery call needs to be about uncovering a use case where you're stronger, not about proving the products are equivalent.

The worst scenario is not knowing: you waste time on features and comparisons your prospect doesn't care about, while the competitor's strength goes unaddressed because you never identified it.

Competitive win rate vs. win rate vs. displacement rate

Term What it measures When you use it
Competitive win rate Percentage won when you and one specific competitor both advance Pipeline inspection, deal strategy, battle card content
Overall win rate Percentage of all deals you close, regardless of competition Forecast health, team performance, quota analysis
Displacement rate Percentage of deals where you beat an incumbent or existing solution Account expansion, competitive displacement deals, land strategy

Competitive win rate answers "How do we perform against Competitor A specifically?" Win rate answers "How healthy is our sales engine?" Displacement rate answers "When we take share from what they currently use, how often do we win?"

Many reps confuse competitive win rate with overall win rate. You might have an 35% overall win rate but a 60% competitive win rate against one specific player—meaning the deals you lose are mostly to competitors you don't win against often, not because your conversion funnel is broken.

The mistake people make

Reps and managers often estimate competitive win rate from memory or anecdote: "I think we beat them most of the time." This guess leads to wrong battle cards, misaligned positioning, and discovery questions that don't address the real decision drivers.

The only accurate competitive win rate comes from your CRM data. Pull every deal in the past 12 months where your company competed against Competitor A and both made it to the evaluation stage—not deals where they were mentioned casually, but deals where both solutions were genuinely considered. Track win-loss pattern, not gut feel.

For sales leaders, competitive win rates by rep or by deal stage also surface training needs. If one rep wins 70% against Competitor A but the team average is 45%, that rep is doing something right in discovery or positioning—worth documenting.

Common questions

How is competitive win rate different from overall win rate?

Competitive win rate measures wins only in deals where you faced a specific competitor and both solutions made the shortlist. Overall win rate includes all deals closed, regardless of competition. A 30% overall win rate can coexist with a 65% competitive win rate if you're losing most of your deals to competitors you don't win against often.

How do I calculate competitive win rate?

Divide the number of deals won against a specific competitor by the total number of deals where both your solution and theirs advanced to evaluation. Example: If you won 8 out of 15 deals where you competed directly against Competitor A, your competitive win rate is 53%.

Why does competitive win rate matter for my deals?

It tells you whether to lean into differentiation or change your discovery strategy in a specific matchup. A high rate means your positioning works—double down on it. A low rate signals you need battle cards, updated discovery questions, or a different proof point to win those head-to-head evaluations.

Can competitive win rate change by stage or deal size?

Yes. You might win 70% of mid-market deals against a competitor but only 35% of enterprise deals where they're stronger. Segment your CRM data by deal value, industry, or use case to find where you're genuinely competitive and where you need different messaging.

What should I do if my competitive win rate against one competitor is below 40%?

Either avoid those deals, change your discovery to uncover use cases where you're stronger, or revisit your positioning and proof points. A low rate means your standard pitch isn't winning. Reps should ask 'Why did we lose?' in your win-loss reviews to fix it.
